Doué la Fontaine Biopark

The Doué-La-Fontaine Biopark, just 30 minutes from our Angers campsite, is unique in more ways than one. More than just an animal park, the design of this living space truly immerses visitors in the natural environment of the species they encounter.
The first special feature is its 17-hectare site in the heart of falun quarries, an aggregate of shells, sand and clay dating back to the Paleolithic period, when the sea was present in Anjou.

A zoo in a troglodytic site unique in the world: the Bioparc de Doué la Fontaine

These quarries of very soft rock have enabled the natural décor to be adapted to the needs of the various animals, with islands, waterfalls and plant formations decorating the large areas reserved for each species. In this way, you change continents as you pass through troglodytic passages carved into the rock, benefiting from natural air-conditioning.

On the other hand, its designers wanted to share their passion for the world and their knowledge of wilderness areas by taking visitors on a real journey. Here, we move forward like explorers through atmospheres that surprise and excite.
The Bioparc team gives pride of place to animals whose species are endangered, while working with animal protection associations in their countries of origin. The quality of the animals and the quality of the information provided are designed to make us aware of the respect that man owes to nature. No training is used! A must-see during your Slow Village vacation!

Animals to see at the Doué la Fontaine Biopark

The main attraction of the Bioparc and the reason for visiting are, of course, the animals that live there.

Whether they come from Africa, South America, the Indian Ocean, Asia, or Europe, there are nearly 130 species belonging to three major families: mammals, birds, and reptiles, for a total of more than 1,900 animalsspread out across XXL spaces!

Among the mammals, you will encounter giraffes, rhinos, spectacled bears, maned wolves, lions, cheetahs, pygmy hippos, gibbons, and more.

A concert ofbirdsong awaits you in the park's various aviaries. In the large South American aviary, parrots, flamingos, gulls, ducks, savacou and ibis will transport you to an Andean canyon. In the African aviary, you will be amazed by the soundscape created by weaver birds, hoopoes, vulturine guinea fowls, mesh-tailed doves and other birds.

At the vivarium, you will encounter three species of reptiles: the broad-snouted crocodile, the royal python, and the impressive green anaconda. Five species of turtles (Hermann's tortoise, Seychelles giant tortoise, leopard tortoise, radiated tortoise, and sulcata tortoise) can be seen in different areas of the zoo.

Among the species represented at the Bioparc, 30% are listed as "endangered" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
The most endangered species include the Mhorr gazelle, the Central African giraffe, the pinched tamarin (a small monkey), the Sumatran tiger, the red ruffed lemur, the black rhinoceros, the radiated tortoise, and the Lafresnaye macaw.
