During your stay at Slow Village Belle-Île-en-Mer, the Pointe des Poulains is a must-see destination located at the island’s northwestern tip. This protected natural area offers one of the most spectacular views in Brittany. Combining historical heritage and untamed nature, this place embodies everything that makes the largest of the Ponant Islands so special.

Why Pointe des Poulains?

The name “Poulains” does not come from the animal, but from the Breton word “Poul-Lenn,” which means “pond” or “waterhole.” This name refers to the eddies and strong currents that form around the rocky islet. It is this raw, untamed aspect that makes it, for many, the most beautiful spot on Belle-Île-en-Mer. The site is managed by the Conservatoire du littoral to preserve its biodiversity and wild character in the face of the influx of visitors each year.

The Poulains Lighthouse and its islet

The famous Poulains Lighthouse stands at the tip of the headland on a rocky islet. It marks the entrance to the channel leading to the port of Palais for ships arriving from the open sea.

Access that depends on the tide

The lighthouse islet is accessible only at low tide. A path of sand and rock emerges, allowing walkers to pass, but caution is advised: at high tide, the sea completely covers the path. It is a place unlike any other in the world for observing the power of the waves crashing against the headland during storms.

A trip into the heart of nature

Once on the islet, you can explore an exhibition inside the lighthouse house that explains how this natural area is managed. The headland offers breathtaking views of Belle-Île’s rugged coastline and, on a clear day, all the way tothe island of Groix.

Sarah Bernhardt and her attachment to Belle-Île

Pointe des Poulains is inextricably linked to the figure of Sarah Bernhardt. The famous tragedienne fell in love with this place during a visit in the late 19th century and decided to make it her summer home.

Le Fortin and Villa Lysiane

The actress first purchased an old, abandoned military fort before having Villa Lysiane built to accommodate her family and friends. Today, this complex is part of Belle-Île’s historical heritage. Sarah Bernhardt’s home has been turned into a museum, allowing visitors to step into the private world of “La Divine” and gain insight into her daily life by the sea.

The Actress's Garden

The estate also features a landscaped garden designed in accordance with the local vegetation, which is resistant to sea spray. A stroll through this space reveals how the artist has managed to tame this wild landscape without detracting from its beauty.
