If you’re looking for a water sport that combines the great outdoors with an adrenaline rush without necessarily getting wet, sand yachting is the premier activity on Brittany’s beaches. With its kilometers of coastline exposed to westerly winds, Brittany is a top destination for both beginners and experienced sand yachters.

Whether you're spending this time with family or friends, here's everything you need to know to enjoy the beaches of Brittany during your stay at Slow Village.

What are the best places for sand yachting in Brittany?

The Breton coastline is full of vast beaches that are ideal for the sport. For a spot to be considered suitable, it needs a large area of fine, flat sand with few obstacles. Three major bays stand out:

  • The Bay of Saint-Michel in Ille-et-Vilaine: It’s a vast playground that opens up at low tide. Riding with a breathtaking view of Mont-Saint-Michel offers a landscape unlike any other in the world.
  • Douarnenez Bay and Pentrez Beach (Finistère): With more than four kilometers of firm sand, this remote spot is perfect for safely reaching top speeds.
  • Quiberon Bay and Penthièvre Beach (Morbihan): Located on the isthmus, this beach enjoys very consistent wind conditions, making it a popular spot for both competitions and beginners.

What happens during a sand yachting session?

If you've never climbed in a climbing frame before, don't worry. When you arrive at a climbing school, a typical introductory session usually lasts between 1 hour and 30 minutes and 2 hours.

The instructor starts by getting you geared up (a helmet is required, and gloves are strongly recommended) before introducing you to the equipment. After a quick briefing on safety and the day’s weather, it’s time for some action. We start with a short, simple course to learn how to trim the sail and steer with your feet (because yes, you steer the sled with the foot pedal, keeping your hands on the sail lines!). You’ll feel the thrill of gliding right from the start, even in a light breeze.

Tips for Beginners: Riding and Stopping

Getting the hang of a sail tank is fairly intuitive, but it requires understanding a few basic principles:

Gaining speed:

To move forward, you need to position the boat relative to the wind (often at an angle) and trim the sheet to fill the sail.

Tacking:

The instructor will teach you how to navigate turns into the wind or downwind while staying on course so you don't lose your balance.

How do you stop?

This is often the biggest fear for beginners. To slow down or stop the sandboard, the main technique is to collapse the sail (let go of the rope to let the air out) and turn the front of the sandboard into the wind. The sandboard then naturally comes to a stop on the sand within a few meters.

What activities do sand yachting schools offer ?

Organizations affiliated with the French Sailboat Federation (FFCV) offer programs tailored to each participant's needs:

  • The Introductory Session: Perfect for a family's first experience or for curious tourists passing through.
  • The Advanced Training Course: Spanning several days, this course helps participants develop more refined techniques and learn to drive faster tanks.
  • Guided two-person flights: Perfect for young children or anyone who prefers to share the experience in tandem with an instructor or a loved one.

Our Tips for a Successful Outing

  • Check the tide tables: This is the key information. This activity is only possible at low tide, when the sea recedes to reveal a wide strip of hard sand.
  • Dress warmly: Even on a beautiful summer day, the speed and the coastal breeze can quickly cool the air. Be sure to bring a windbreaker and clothing that can withstand splashes of wet sand.
  • As for prices: You can generally expect to pay between €35 and €55 for a 1.5-hour guided introductory session, with all necessary equipment included.
