Our favourite cycling routes in North Finistère

North Finistère is an invitation to disconnect, especially by bike with Slow Village. Bicycle tourism in Brittany is booming, with a 28% increase in the number of visitors over the last five years. For a bike ride in North Finistère, our open-air hotel at Breizh Légendes is the ideal base for discovering the Côte des Légendes.

The Legends Loop: a family walk through our heritage

For a gentle, accessible first approach, this "Tro Vélo 1" loop is a marvel. Designed for family cycling in North Finistère, it starts directly from Plounéour-Brignogan-Plages. No need for a car, the adventure begins just a few pedal strokes from your accommodation.

This easy 25 km route, ideal for beginners and families, undulates between quiet country roads and paths that reveal a discreet but very present natural heritage. You'll come across the Men Marz menhir, a stone giant that has watched over the coast for millennia, a silent witness to local legends. It's a chance to take your time, stop for a photo, share a snack in front of an authentic landscape and create simple, precious memories.

Practical information:

  • Itinerary: "Tro Vélo 1" loop - La Côte des Légendes
  • Distance: 25 km
  • Level: easy, ideal for a first cycling in North Finistère.
  • Starting point: Plounéour-Brignogan-Plages (just a few minutes from your Slow Village accommodation).

Which bike route is best for admiring the Île Vierge lighthouse?

The wild coastline is revealed in all its splendor along La Littorale (V45), North Finistère's iconic cycling route. Between sculpted rocks and crystal-clear coves, this route is a true sensory experience, like a lively stroll along the seafront.

Starting out from Kerlouan, the little ribines, asphalted roads with few cars, provide the ideal atmosphere for immersing yourself in the local countryside. The rather demanding route, with its undulating hills, rewards effort with stunning panoramas. The highlight? The gradual appearance of the Île Vierge lighthouse, a stone giant rising to 82.5 metres, recognized as the highest stone lighthouse in Europe. Shortly afterwards, the path leads toAber Wrac'h, a natural haven and picturesque port of call.

So that contemplation outweighs effort, the electrically-assisted bicycle (VAE), available for hire at Slow Village, makes this adventure accessible to all.

Practical information:

  • Route: the Littorale (V45) from Kerlouan to Plouguerneau
  • Distance: approx. 20-25 km (one way)
  • Level: intermediate. The difference in altitude makes this bike tour in North Finistère more demanding, but very rewarding.
  • Starting point: Kerlouan, about 10 minutes' drive from Slow Village Breizh Légendes.

La Vélodyssée: a greenway between Roscoff and Morlaix

For a change of scenery and to discover another facet of Finistère, the Vélodyssée (EV1), which here merges with Voie 7 linking Roscoff to Concarneau, offers a real journey into the agricultural heart of Léon. This itinerary is part of a wider network that includes the famous Nantes-Brest canal.

Departing from the small, picturesque town of Saint-Pol-de-Léon, the route follows an old railroad line that has been converted into a greenway. These cycle paths in Finistère are safe and mostly flat, perfect for a long family outing. It's a favorite ride for those looking to cover miles in peace and quiet. You'll pedal through the famous "primeur" fields, with breathtaking views across the Bay of Morlaix.

The arrival in Saint-Pol-de-Léon, with its cathedral and rich heritage, adds a cultural dimension to this bike ride in Northern Brittany.

Practical information:

  • Route: La Vélodyssée® (EV1) / Voie 7 from Saint-Pol-de-Léon
  • Distance: 30 km (to Morlaix)
  • Level: easy to intermediate. Mostly flat on the greenway.
  • Departure point: Saint-Pol-de-Léon, about 30 minutes' drive from the open-air hotel.

Frequently asked questions about cycling in North Finistère

How difficult are the cycle paths in North Finistère?

The region offers great diversity. Greenways like the V7 are very accessible, ideal for families. Coastal routes such as the V45 are more rugged, with short but sometimes steep climbs. It's this variety that makes the region so rich, and the use of a VAE allows you to modulate your effort and concentrate on the pleasure.

Can I cycle on the customs path (GR34)?

The famous "sentier des douaniers", or GR34, is reserved exclusively for pedestrians. Cycling is therefore prohibited. However, the La Littorale cycle route (V45) has been designed as its equivalent for cyclists. It follows the coastline as closely as possible, on small shared roads, providing a very similar experience with breathtaking sea views.
