Herlin Beach on Belle-Île: Swimming, Access, and Practical Tips
During your stay at Slow Village Belle-Île-en-Mer, Herlin Beach is a must-visit destination located just 15 minutes from the resort. Nestled on the island’s southern coast, in the town of Bangor, this stretch of fine sand lies at the bottom of a deep valley. Protected by high cliffs that shield it from prevailing winds, it offers a spectacular, untamed setting. It’s the ideal spot for those looking for a seaside destination in Brittany where they can combine relaxation with hiking.
A pristine natural setting nestled between cliffs and a valley
The Herlin site is notable for its unique geographical layout. At high tide, the beach is actually divided into two parts by a rocky outcrop, creating a cove on the left and another on the right.
A sensitive ecosystem
The valley leading to the sea is home to a protected plant species and a dune ecosystem. To preserve this natural beauty, please stay on the marked trail and avoid walking on the dunes. In fact, it’s from the coastal trail overlooking the beach that you’ll be able to take the best photo of the cove and admire the crystal-clear water.
Directions and Parking
Free parking is available at the top of the valley for those heading to the beach. Since the area is very popular throughout the year, especially in the summer, parking spaces are limited. From the parking lot, it’s about a 10-minute walk down to the beach.
Swimming and Safety at Herlin Beach
Thanks to its location and the shelter provided by the cliffs, Herlin is often cited as one of the warmest beaches in Brittany. The water here is calmer than along the wild coast, making it a very popular spot for families.
Supervision and swimming area
Safety measures are in place during the summer months. A designated swimming area is marked off and monitored by lifeguards from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It is important to follow safety guidelines, because even if the sea appears calm, a current may form in the middle of the cove depending on the tidal range.
Practical information about the activities
Although the beach is ideal for relaxing, there is no on-site water sports center in order to preserve its natural beauty. However, the area is perfect for snorkeling along the rocky headland, where marine life is abundant. Please note that pets are generally not allowed on the sandy beach during the high season.
