The Great Lighthouse of Goulphar: visit and practical information

The Goulphar lighthouse, located near Slow Village in Belle-Île-en-Mer, is a monument symbolizing safety for sailors navigating off the coast of Brittany. Located in the commune ofBangor, this majestic lighthouse stands as a historical witness to maritime tradition. Built in the 19th century, it has been guiding ships since 1835 and remainsone of the most beautiful lighthouses in all of Brittany.

Architecture and construction secrets of the granite giant

The Goulphar lighthouse was built as part of a major project to light up the French coastline, spearheaded byengineer Augustin Fresnel. Today, visitors can explore the building's grounds, discover its history, and admire breathtaking views of the sea. The building is distinguished by its first-class tower architecture, designed by a talented architect and site manager to withstand centuries of Atlantic storms.

How tall is the Great Lighthouse of Goulphar?

This giant stands 52 meters above the ground. Its lantern and optics actually reach 92 meters above sea level. This elevation gives its light an exceptional range, ensuring safe navigation.

What type of architecture characterizes the Goulphar lighthouse?

It is a cylindrical tower made of local granite, attached to a group of buildings that once served as accommodation for the keeper and his family. Inside the lighthouse, the genius of Augustin Fresnel is everywhere. The Fresnel lens, the true heart of the device, projects a powerful beam of light every minute thanks to a high-tech lamp. This rotating system remains a precision machine that enthusiasts admire at every exhibition or visit.

Preparing for your trip: the climb to the summit

Whether you're looking for spectacular views or sporting activities, a visit to the Goulphar lighthouse is sure to be a memorable experience. To enjoy this breathtaking view of Belle-Île, you'll have to earn your access: climb the 247 steps of the staircase located in the interior hall.
