Les Jardins de Marqueyssac: a family tour to marvel at

Suspended above the Dordogne valley, the Jardins de Marqueyssac are a must-see in the Dordogne, ideal for families. With their 150,000 hundred-year-old hand-carved boxwoods, they form a veritable ballet of vegetation, the passionate work of Julien de Cerval in the XIXᵉ century.

The self-guided trail winds its way through the pruned boxwood, revealing a new panorama of the Beynac castles at every step. Beynac castles, Castelnaud or La Roque-Gageac. Classified as a Remarkable Garden and a listed site, these gardens offer over 6 km of romantic walks on a 22-hectare estate.

For children, it's an adventure: suspended nets, play areas, free-roaming peacocks, and even a cliffside Via Ferrata, accessible from age 8, for thrill-seekers. This visit combines contemplation, play and discovery, making the Jardins de Marqueyssac a family activity par excellence in the Dordogne.

Vézère Valley: canoeing down the river for a gentle discovery experience

Imagine silence, punctuated only by the lapping of your paddles. Canoeing down the Vézère Valley (and sometimes the Dordogne) means letting yourself be guided by the peaceful tempo of the river. These family excursions in the Dordogne are accessible from the age of 5, provided you can swim, thanks to numerous rental companies near Sarlat like Canoë Rando Dordogne, renowned for their warm, professional welcome.

The route through the Vézère Valley, classified as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, is an immersion in the heart of a preserved ecosystem. You can glide along peacefully, observe a castle perched at the bend of a meander, or stop off on a pebble beach for a picnic. It's a gentle, ecological and accessible way of discovering the beauty of the Périgord Noir, and an ideal family activity for enjoying nature and getting away from it all.

What family outings are there in the Dordogne to take you back in time?

Périgord is a veritable open-air history book. Two nearby, complementary sites let you explore its most fascinating pages, from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

Château de Castelnaud: plunge into medieval adventure

Overlooking the Dordogne valley, Château de Castelnaud, one of the département's five most visited sites, faces its eternal rival: Château de Beynac. This fortress, far from being static, is intensely alive. Children become real knights as they learn how to handle a sword, don period costumes or discover Playmobil® exhibits. The highlight? The demonstration of the trebuchet, a life-size catapult that impresses young and old alike. A fun, interactive visit not to be missed on your family vacation in the Dordogne.

La Roque Saint-Christophe: discovering a troglodyte habitat

Carved into a kilometer-long cliff overlooking the Vézère River, La Roque Saint-Christophe has been inhabited for over 55,000 years. This troglodytic site guarantees a breathtaking journey through the ages, from prehistoric to medieval times. Perfectly sheltered, it can be visited in all weathers. Committed to an ecological approach ( NF Environnement label), the site offers immersive activities: demonstrations of medieval lifting equipment, reconstructions of dwellings... A captivating place for young and old, where stone tells the story.

Lanternes des Morts, silent witnesses to the past, are still intriguingly mysterious today. These medieval monuments, erected in several regions of France, symbolize an ancestral link between the living and departed souls.
