The Bastides of Périgord

Domme, Monpazier, Villefranche... all names that evoke calm, history and authenticity. An ideal getaway to discover Périgord in a different way, at the slow and inspiring pace of slow tourism with Slow village.

These medieval villages, designed with rigor and open to nature, deliver a perfect balance between heritage and gentle living. Stroll through the arcaded squares, linger under the stone covered market halls, marvel at the scenery from the ramparts. Just a few kilometers from our Slow Village Seveille, the bastides of Périgord invite you to step back in time.

What isa bastide?

Born in the 13th century, bastides are new towns founded mainly in south-western France. Built on a regular (often checkerboard) plan, they reflected a desire for order, commerce and stability at a time still marked by feudal conflicts.

At the heart of each bastide is a large square, often lined with arcades, where the market is held. Around it, the streets intersect at right angles, the market hall occupies a central place, and the church, sometimes fortified, completes this harmonious whole. This urban model, both functional and aesthetic, is unique in Europe.

Commanded by kings, counts or abbots, these towns also had a strategic purpose: to establish power, structure a territory and attract inhabitants. Today, they have become bright, peaceful places to live, perfect for exploring on foot, between history and the gentleness of the Périgord.
