At the gates of Angers, a château that bears witness to history
At the gateway to Angers, the Château des Ponts-de-Cé dominates the Loire, where the river divides into several arms. Its strategic position has made it an essential crossroads for both trade and defense.
Built in the XIᵉ century, the edifice has lived a thousand lives, according to the times and uses:
- Medieval fortress: guarding the river and protecting the bridges.
- Royal residence: Louis XI, attached to Anjou, stayed here regularly.
- A place of conflict: in the XVIIᵉ century, the Fronde marked its history with violent clashes.
- Prison and warehouse: the château gradually lost its military role.
- Museum: in the XIXᵉ century, it opened up to popular memory and cultural transmission.
From a defensive fortress to a place of discovery, the Château des Ponts-de-Cé has endured the centuries without losing its aura. Today, its stones continue to carry the echoes of battles, kings and traditions. A peaceful witness to a past at the heart of the Loire Valley.
Powerful yet elegant architecture
The Château des Ponts-de-Cé, built of tufa stone, bears the imprint of its defensive past. Its thick ramparts and towers are a reminder of its original military vocation: to protect the bridges linking the different banks of the Loire.
Over the centuries, successive reconstructions and restorations have softened this silhouette. Volumes have been simplified and lines refined, giving the building a more sober, harmonious appearance. The light-colored stone, characteristic of the Anjou region, captures the light and brings out the solidity of the walls.
Inside, the spaces have undergone multiple adaptations: fortified rooms, apartments, then exhibition spaces. Each transformation tells a new page in its history, without totally erasing the previous ones.
Today, the building stands out less as a fortress than as a heritage monument integrated into the Loire landscape, between medieval heritage and modern adaptations.

The Museum of Headdresses and Traditions
Since the XIXᵉ century, the Château des Ponts-de-Cé has been home to an original museum devoted entirely to traditional headdresses and costumes. This fragile and often little-known textile heritage tells the daily story of the people of Anjou and, more broadly, Western France.
The collections feature several hundred items, including embroidered headdresses, ceremonial garments and work clothes, as well as objects linked to local know-how. Each room highlights a different aspect of folk life, from religious practices to village festivals and family traditions.
Beyond the aesthetics of the pieces, the museum offers a plunge into collective memory. Headdresses, once worn according to age, status or region, reflect a forgotten social language. Browse through these showcases to understand how clothing reflected the identity and traditions of a territory.
Housed in the history-laden walls of the Château des Ponts-de-Cé, the Musée des coiffes et des traditions links architectural and intangible heritage, inviting visitors to discover the richness of Loire culture.
The château, in the heart of an exceptional Loire Valley setting
The Château des Ponts-de-Cé is set in a unique setting: the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set on a slight promontory, it faces the river and accompanies its variations through the seasons.
The surrounding area offers a diversity of landscapes: sandy shores, wet meadows and renowned vineyards. These areas are easy to explore on foot or by bike, thanks to the signposted footpaths and the Loire à Vélo itinerary that crosses the commune.
A stroll around the château combines cultural discovery with immersion in the natural surroundings of the Loire Valley. Here, heritage and landscape intertwine to guarantee an experience that's both simple and complete.
