The wines of Île de Ré: the story of a unique terroir

The history of viticulture on the Île de Ré dates back to the 13th century, introduced by the Cistercian monks of the Châteliers Abbey . Since then, grape cultivation has shaped the island's landscapes. While the cultivated areas have changed over the centuries, the expertise of local winemakers has remained unchanged, taking advantage of exceptional sunshine and sandy soils swept by sea spray.

A terroir marked by the ocean

The vineyards of Ré now extend over several hundred hectares. The proximity of the ocean acts as a thermal regulator, limiting winter frosts and tempering summer heat. This climate allows grape varieties such as Sauvignon , Chardonnay , and Colombard for white wines, and Merlot and Cabernet for red wines, to express a very particular freshness and minerality.

Wine tourism on the Ile de Ré

During your holiday at Slow Village Saint-Martin-de-Ré , meeting the winemakers and exploring the vineyard landscapes is a must. The vineyards of Ré are best discovered by bike, following the cycle paths that wind between the vines and salt marshes. This approach allows you to take the time to observe the work in the vineyards and understand how the vines adapt to the island climate.

Exploring wine tourism on the Île de Ré also means enjoying tastings directly from local producers . Many wineries open their doors to showcase the unique characteristics of the island's grape varieties, from saline white wines and fruity rosés to the traditional Pineau des Charentes. It's a unique opportunity to understand the ocean's influence on the vines while taking home an authentic souvenir of your stay.
