Tourism in Angers: What to do and see? The Practical Guide

Former seat of the Plantagenets, Angers is the historic capital of Anjou.
Between the Loire and Maine rivers, it offers an infinite variety of activities, from cultural visits to nature walks, water sports and gastronomic discoveries. The city of Angers Loire Métropole in the Loire Valley abounds in tourist attractions, including UNESCO World Heritage Loire castles, abbeys and vineyards to visit on walking tours.

How to prepare for your stay in Angers

Are you about to book a stay at Angers campground?

To make sure you don't miss out on any of the activities available in Angers and the surrounding area, be sure to visit the city's tourist office at the start of your stay. Located next to the castle, it will give you the opportunity to admire the royal fortress and the gardens laid out in its moat.

Plan to visit the city during the week to enjoy the shops and a more peaceful atmosphere.

Don't forget to include an evening at a local restaurant in your itinerary, and be sure to book in advance.

Angers: France's leading green city

Ranked first among France's green cities, the capital of Anjou offers a perfect balance between urban life and nature: its urban area has the largest amount of green space per square meter of any city in France, with parks, gardens, and natural spaces right in the heart of the city, such as Balzac Park, where cows graze just opposite the castle and the medieval center.

With 100 square meters of green space per inhabitant, Angers, the second largest city in the Pays-de-la-Loire region, really stands out. Angers is also a green city in terms of its eco-responsibility: no chemicals are used in the city's parks and gardens.

Many projects continue to flourish, such as the greening of sidewalks and free picking from fruit trees.

It is therefore only natural that Angers is also home to the first theme park dedicated to plants: Terra Botanica.

Visit the historic center of Angers

The historic center of Angers is mainly located on the left bank of the Maine River, to the east.

Here you can admire medieval half-timbered houses, including the famous House of Adam, as well as mansions built between the Renaissance and the 19th century. On the banks of the Maine River, the castle with its imposing fortified towers awaits you.

In the heart of the old town, you can't miss Saint Maurice Cathedral and the bishop's palace next to it. On Place du Ralliement, the Grand Théâtre is a remarkable example of the eclectic architecture typical of the Second Empire.

The center of Angers is also home to several museums, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, housed in the Logis Barrault, the oldest mansion in the city, the David d'Angers Gallery, located in the former Toussaint Abbey, the Museum of Contemporary Tapestry, and the Natural History Museum.

The narrow streets of old Angers, lined with shops, are the perfect place to stroll and shop.

We have prepared a detailed map of Angers for you.

Top 5 activities in Angers

The castle and the Apocalypse tapestries:
An impressive fortress with 800 meters of fortifications punctuated by 17 towers. It houses the largest collection of medieval tapestries in the world, depicting scenes from the Apocalypse.

Terra Botanica: a theme park based around plants, with extraordinary gardens to visit, 4D cinema, games, rides, numerous shows and a static hot-air balloon.

Leisure activities in Balzac Park and on Lac de Maine: walks, boating, swimming and relaxing at the Héron Carré guinguette.

Shopping in the streets and lanes of the historic center: a chance to admire the glass roof of Galeries Lafayette, the sculpted façade of Maison d'Adam, and the Grand Théâtre on Place du Ralliement.
