Dog-friendly vacations in the Dordogne

Check out our guide

The joy of going on vacation with your dog in one of France’s most beautiful departments is an experience to be shared to the fullest. Welcome to our home! At the Slow Village in Saint-Cybranet and Séveilles, the Dordogne—and more specifically the Périgord Noir—is the perfect destination for a vacation with a pet. Here, tourism is experienced on four legs.

Between the misty valleys of the Vézère, the sentinel-like castles, and the hanging gardens, everything comes together for a perfect getaway in the heart of the region. This comprehensive guide will help you plan every moment with your four-legged friend in the Dordogne, taking advantage of our facilities designed with their well-being in mind.

Must-see places to visit with your dog in the Périgord

A tour of Dordogne’s cultural heritage is easily accessible with your pets. The department is full of sites that welcome your dog, allowing you to combine culture and outdoor relaxation, all while staying close to our sites in Saint-Cybranet and Séveilles

Dog-friendly castles and fortresses just a stone's throw away

The Périgord is a land of a thousand and one castles. If you’re planning a vacation, you should know that the Beynac Castle and the Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, located near our villages, welcome your pets. This is a unique opportunity to explore French history with your dog. Be sure to take a souvenir photo of your faithful companion before continuing on to the many other historic castles that dot the region.

A leisurely stroll through the gardens and villages

The Marqueyssac Gardens Overlooking the Dordogne at the Jardins de l’Imaginaire in Terrasson, the Périgord offers a unique sensory experience.

As for villages, take a stroll through Saint-Jean-de-Côle or Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, medieval gems where your dog will love to tag along. Extend your getaway into the Lot region to the must-see town of Rocamadour, which you can explore with your faithful companion. Be sure to check out our article on the fascinating cave villages in the surrounding area.

In the Footsteps of Prehistory

The valley is world-famous for its caves such as Lascaux. While dogs are strictly prohibited inside, the Conquil site, located near the Vézère River, allows you to explore the prehistory of the Dordogne with your pet along a shaded trail surrounded by nature.

Activities, Food & Leisure: Exploring the Périgord on Four Paws

There’s no shortage of things to do in the Dordogne, so you’ll never be bored during your stay.

A canoeing adventure on the river

The highlight of the trip is undoubtedly canoeing on the Dordogne or Vézère rivers. Gliding along the water with your dog comfortably settled in the front is a moment of pure bonding. Our rental partners, located very close to Saint-Cybranet, are accustomed to welcoming pets and sometimes provide special life jackets to ensure complete safety. Discover the best spots for go canoeing.

Hiking and the great outdoors

The Périgord is also best explored on foot. The Falaise du Conte trail, located just a short distance from our village, offers spectacular views of the valley—perfect for a walk with your dog. For the more active, a morning run around Saint-Cybranet, when the foehn wind hasn’t yet warmed the air too much, is a pure delight for stretching your legs.

Where to eat? Discover the Slow Village open-air cafés

When it comes to good food, there’s no need to travel far. Right here in our Slow Villages, the open-air cafés welcome you for a friendly get-together. It’s the perfect way to enjoy local specialties without any stress: your dog is welcome to join you.

If you'd like to explore beyond the village, the medieval town of Sarlat, located right next door, is full of outdoor dining areas where finding a dog-friendly restaurant is a breeze. Enjoy local specialties (foie gras, truffles, confit) while your dog relaxes in the shade.

Health and Safety: Staying Alert in the Great Outdoors

The natural beauty of the Périgord Noir offers an incredible experience, but requires a few precautions to ensure your vacation remains enjoyable:

Ticks: They are very common in the tall grass in this area and can transmit diseases. After every walk in the woods or on a trail, check your dog thoroughly.

Grass seeds: These dry seeds can get stuck in your dog’s coat and may work their way under the skin or into their ears. Brush your dog after every walk.

Cyanobacteria: When canoeing during your vacation, avoid stagnant water, especially during hot weather, to protect your pet from these toxic bacteria.

Heat: The sun in the Southwest can be intense. Always bring water with you and try to go out early in the morning before the foehn wind causes temperatures to rise.

Your best vacation ever awaits you

A vacation with your dog in the Dordogne promises an unforgettable return to nature. With sports activities, exploring historic villages, and relaxing by the pool in Saint-Cybranet or Séveilles, your stay will be perfect.

We sincerely hope to have the pleasure of seeing you and your dog soon at our Slow Village. Get your leashes ready—the Périgord Noir awaits you for an extraordinary adventure!
