  • Distance: 15 km one way
  • Distance from our open-air hotel: 1.8 km - 8 min by bike
  • Level: easy
  • Type: city bike or VTC
  • Salt marshes, villages, nature

We leave the ramparts of Saint-Martin-de-Ré behind, and slowly make our way into the calm of the salt marshes along the cycle paths of the Ile de Ré. The scenery gradually changes, with architecture giving way to space, flat horizons and the sky taking over. On this peaceful path, you move to the rhythm of the egrets and the wind, between the shallow basins and the salt-marsh huts.

At the end of the road, Loix appears, like a parenthesis between land and sea. This small village, set in the heart of the marshes, has a very special atmosphere. Simple, artisanal and welcoming.

Our tip: take binoculars with you: the marsh area is an exceptional bird-watching area. For children, it's also a great opportunity to learn torecognize the shapes of the landscape, salt plants and the traces of human work in nature.

From La Flotte to Sainte-Marie-de-Ré: quiet harbours and flower-filled lanes

  • Duration: approx. 1 h 30
  • Walking distance: 12 to 14 km round trip
  • Distance from our outdoor hotel: 21 km - 1h25 minutes by bike
  • Level: easy
  • Type: city bike
  • Seaside, heritage, Retais charm

This walk gently skirts the shoreline, between a calm ocean and white houses with blue shutters. From the port of La Flotte, listed as one of France's most beautiful villages, the route follows a discreet and luminous coastline, punctuated by small paths, low stone walls and flowering gardens.

We come across a few beached boats, quiet fishermen and hollyhocks overflowing onto the paths. Sainte-Marie-de-Ré gradually reveals itself, in a peaceful, almost timeless atmosphere. Life seems to unfold in half-tone, between the slow footsteps of the locals and the steady lapping of the sea.

Our advice: take the time to stroll through the narrow streets of Sainte-Marie's old town center, particularly around the church. Then return to the seafront at the end of the day, when the light softens and the scents of the sea mingle with your own.

From Bois-Plage to Ars-en-Ré through the vineyards: a gentle crossing of the hinterland

  • Duration: approx. 2 h
  • Distance: 18 to 22 km depending on itinerary
  • Distance from our open-air hotel: 4.1 km
  • Level: moderate
  • Type: city bike or VTC
  • Vineyards, villages, countryside

Far from the hustle and bustle of the coastline, this is a more intimate stroll. From Le Bois-Plage, the path opens out between rows of vines and flowering hedges, in the heart of a landscape punctuated by the seasons, the song of insects and the colorful shutters of the houses of the Retagne. In fact, you'll pass through characterful villages such as La Couarde-sur-Mer, then Ars-en-Ré, recognizable by its black-and-white bell tower that watches over the marsh.

To prolong this interlude, you can push on to the beaches of La Conche or Les Prises, where the sea awaits, calm or lively, always changing. An ideal loop to enjoy the simplicity of the island, between land and ocean.

Our tip: set off in the late morning with a picnic in your saddlebags, and stop off in the shade of a fig tree, on the edge of the marshes or at an artisan soap factory on the Ile de Ré.

From Phare des Baleines to Saint-Clément: a wild escape between dunes and light

  • Duration: about 1 hour
  • Distance: 8 to 10 km (one way)
  • Distance from our outdoor hotel: 21 km - 1h25 minutes by bike
  • Level: easy
  • Type: city bike or VTC
  • Nature, seaside, forest

In the north of the island, the wind has kept its rights. Indeed, here everything is more raw, more vast. From the mythical Phare des Baleines, the walk zigzags through a landscape of gold-colored dunes, spray-twisted pines and sandy paths. The sound of the waves is never far away, filtered through the forest that borders the sea.

The route follows the coastline, with the sensation of being at the end of the world. Little traffic, little noise. Only the discreet footsteps of birds and the screech of tires on sandy paths. As you approach Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, time seems to slow down.

Our tip: the ideal time to set off is late afternoon, and finish the walk at the foot of the lighthouse, just before the sun slips behind the horizon.

The complete Ile de Ré loop: for free spirits and hardy riders

  • Duration: approx. 5 h 45
  • Distance: 81.9 km
  • Distance from our outdoor hotel: 3 km - 12 minutes by bike
  • Difference in altitude: 250 m
  • Level: difficult
  • Type: city bike
  • Nature, sports, coastline

Along the coast, through the villages, smelling the pines, the salt and the hollyhocks. This long loop is acomplete immersion in the soul of the island. It's a demanding but deeply rejuvenating itinerary, for those who like to pedal for a long time, in the silence of the dunes, following the wind and the tides.

Departure is from La Flotte, with a first stop in front ofSainte-Catherine church and its stonework bathed in light. Next comes Saint-Martin-de-Ré, with its imposing fortified church and lively alleyways. Then the salt marshes, beaches with poetic names like Trousse-Chemise or Mer du Nord, and the birds of the Lilleau des Niges reserve.

The pace slows down again towards Ars-en-Ré and La Couarde. Then Sainte-Marie, Rivedoux... and the feeling, as we come full circle, that we've really travelled a world apart. A world where you can breathe easier.

Our tip: it's best to take a picnic lunch for a break.

The Ré bee

In the village of Loix, in the north of the island, l'Abeille de Ré is a family-run honey factory created by Aldo François, himself the son of a beekeeper and passionate about his profession. As well as producing artisanal honey, he is committed to raising public awareness of his art and the cause of bees. Transmission is his vocation. The honey house's apiaries are located on the Ile de Ré and in Charente-Maritime, near Saint-Jean d'Angély.

The salt marshes on the Île de Ré

A historic tradition on the Ile de Ré, salt farming sustained the territory from the Middle Ages until the end of the 19ᵉ century. Gradually abandoned over the course of the 20ᵉ century, the salt pans gave way to the marshes and mudflats that form the Lilleau des Niges nature reserve, and are home to precious populations of migratory birds.
