The working drawbridge at the superb Château de Plessis-Bourré and the early 17th-century apothecary at Château de Baugé are also well worth a visit. The Maison d'Adam (15th century) in Angers is home to nearly a hundred craftsmen and incredible collections.

As for nature, in addition to the bucolic strolls along Anjou's wine estates, don't miss the horticultural cocoon of Terra Botanica and the Bioparc de Doué la Fontaine, the only troglodyte zoo in the world, where you can wander through tunnels and plant mazes to admire 1,200 protected animals in a sumptuous green setting.
